Keith Haring (May 4, 1958 – February 16, 1990) was an American artist and activist, whose pop art became synonymous with 1980s New York City street culture. His simplified line artworks mutated into an iconic bold signature style, which on the outset was seemingly pure and innocent, yet was often transformative, political and highly message driven. Drawing inspiration from graffiti artists, Haring first came to public awareness through his chalk drawings randomly left on empty advertising spots across New York’s subway system. This soon evolved into a visual language which would speak for a generation; part of a new visual art scene that in time morphed into the global street art genre of today.
